I have a friend at work who has a cabin on 23 acres on the Blue ridge Parkway in Meadows of Dan Virginia. What a great address "Meadows of Dan". My wife Celeste and I loved visiting there and it put the bug in us to find our own haven.
We started looking for about an acre or so of just land along the blue ridge parkway in the area of Fancy Gap Virginia. We searched for about 2 months. We looked at all manner of spots from 20 miles east of Fancy Gap to 20 miles west. Since we were looking for small pieces we were mostly steered towards communities. We saw some nice ones but the cost of 1-2 acres was about 10-12k per acre.
We finally got a good real estate agent (Kaye from Riley Realty at mile 193 on the Blue Ridge Parkway) who took us to see a house with 5 acres in Galax. While not on the Blue ridge it was only 4 miles from it. Even better was that it is about 7 miles from the nearest Lowes. This house and land was more than we were willing to spend but we loved it and low balled the offer. We negotiated slightly up and got the 2nd home of our dreams. Let's say we had a lot of vision.
The cabin was built in 1988 and has been used about 3-4 times a year since then. I can say that everything in the cabin except for the stove worked. I can also say that everything inside the cabin was OOOLD. Nothing had been updated since being built and most of the fixtures, appliances etc. were old to begin with I think.
Here are some pictures of the cabin soon after the day we bought it. You can see the state of the deck. This is the first thing I needed to fix.
